Best Episode of Ranma ½ – Ranma’s Declaration of Womanhood

Ranma 1/2 Review
As you already know that Ranma ½ has been aclassic and epic (if I am allowed to say) romantic comedy anime. Sometimes manyanime fans have said that Ranma ½ also has a harem sort of thing in its plotand I don’t totally disagree with them. You see, Ranma is often caught withseveral girls chasing him around and we must not forget that he lives withTendo family where we have three gorgeous ladies (I think Akane is not ‘un-cute’)and also, he has three fiancés too.
So, let’s move on to our topic and discuss about thebest episode of Ranma ½.
I loved many episodes of Ranma ½ and it was reallyhard to pick the best one but that’s how it goes. This is obviously my personalopinion and you should treat the ‘choice’ as a disclaimer too.
The best episode to me was, ‘Am I… Pretty Ranma’sDeclaration of Womanhood’ from Season 3 (episode 9).
You see, I started to watch Ranma ½ because I wassearching for a Romantic Comedy Anime, so you can guess why this episodeis voted as ‘best’ by me.
First thing, it’s different from the rest of theepisode and I mean it, ‘really different’. I don’t think that I ever imagined thatRanma could be such a ‘cutie pie’ as a girl until I watched thisepisode.
Other episodes can be considered as repetitivesometimes because most of them, are focused about ‘anything’ (like skating, food delivery, gymnastics, etc.) turned into some martial arts contestand while I am pointing them out, several of them are about fights won by‘Ranma’ in second try and that can become a bit boring sometimes.
However, this episode was different and out of 161 episodesof Ranma ½, the story line was never repeated ever again. So let me tell youwhy I like this episode so much.
Genma Saotome (Ranma’s father)hit him when he was training (not exactly!) and stumbled in their small pondlike always, however, it was a little different this time; he hit a rock behindhis head at the instant before he touched the water. So, when he came to hissenses, he was a girl (because he touched the water) and because he hit therock, he could no longer remember about his boy side. This is when things startto get interesting and funny.
You have to hear that cute voice of Ranma as a girlthat you’ve never heard before in previous episodes even when she was actingvery cute for some personal gain or benefit. I think this is what they call, ‘realityis the beauty’. Also, the way she expresses her feelings about becominga perfect bride in near future and leave martial arts forever because ‘it’scruel and it’s ugly and she doesn’t wanna be a part of it’.
That’s what she said to her (his) father when hedesperately wanted to know the truth about Ranma giving up martial arts and nottaking over Anything Goes Martial Arts School.
Then, as the story proceeds, we see a lot of cute actsby girl Ranma while she hangs out with Akane for a shopping and shows heraffection towards female clothing even when Akane took her after soaking herwith hot water (i.e. changing her into boy again). It’s comes out too damnembarrassing for Akane and too funny for us folks.
The best part was the end when our nasty old pervertHapposai decides to take advantage of cute and innocent Ranma. That’s somethingthat I’ll never forget. Happosai wants Ranma to try a brassiere as always. However, this time, Ranma is not his (her) usual self and won’t kick Happosaito stratosphere.
She (he, God! I am too damn confused) is too innocentto look through Happosai’s nasty plan. After Akane defends her by stopping Happosaifrom doing this disgusting thing and he cries (crocodile tears), Ranma decidesto do as Happosai wants to stop him from crying.
I am not sure if I can explain this but the look onRanma’s face while she was agreeing to try on Happosai’s present, was somethingthat never left my mind. How come a girl can be so innocent and sweet? However,I do think that Akane is a girl too and so are Nabiki and Kasumi. I highlydoubt if they would agree to something this disgusting.
Then, comes my best part because of which I call this‘the best episode of Ranma ½’.
When Akane successfully stops Happosai from seeingRanma try on his present by kicking him to the stratosphere (again), she turnsback and with tears in her eyes, she says some of the dearest lines that Ishall never forget and cherish every time I come across Ranma ½.
“Changeback Ranma! … I don’t care if you are rude, and insensitive, andinconsiderate… I know I complain all the time, but sweet & innocent just isn’tyou! If you stay a girl then who will I… what am I gonna….”
So… do you catchwhat I am trying to throw at you? I hope you do, alright? I really don’t carewhat you make of those unfinished dialogues. However, I have my own ones andthat makes them my favourite lines from the whole Ranma ½ anime.
‘If you staya girl then who will I Love… what am I gonna Do Without You…?’
It’s not toocreative, isn’t it? Well, I am not looking to create a new Manga here. I justfilled those spaces and read them aloud to me and they became ‘the’ mostbeautiful lines. Would you not agree?
You wanted myopinion… Well… You’ve got one and I want to hear some of yours. So put on yourthinking cap and start thinking fellas!
