I’ve just finished watching this anime and thememories are still fresh to tell you about Black Lagoon anime. To summarize itin just few words, ‘this anime is about action packed gun slinging girls whobang their ways for two reasons, one: to make their theories of living lifeseem right and two: to gain power and money. Now you might be wondering aboutwhat the heck I mean from this! Well… for starters… they shoot because theybelieve what they are doing is right and others, for money.
Black Lagoon is a shipping company that shipsillegal goods (from person to weapons) from their clients to their receivers.Usually these deals don’t turn out very good and they have to shoot (and I meanit, it becomes a shootout war) to make the deliveries.
If you chose this anime to watch some girls inaction, then you are in for a treat! Our main gun slinger girl is Revy orRevecca. She had a really hard time when she was little and used to run ingutters to hang on to dear life. Some of her memories include, get beaten up bycops for no reason at all and incidents like these changed her beliefs in godand prayers.
She began to kill and found a new power in herhands, ‘Guns’. She is also portrayed as greedy, however, loyal to her friends.
If you ask me, there doesn’t seem to be anyprotagonist in this anime, because the whole story isn’t about Revy killing everyone.It’s more about greed for money and power.
Here comes our man who doesn’t like gunsbecause he never used one and now wants everyone to talk their way throughproblems. His name is Rock and he is Japanese. He is a sort of narrator of thisanime and the anime starts with him narrating who he is and what he does. He isoften shown as the heart of Black Lagoon because he can solve conflicts withtheir clients without guns and power and keeps a balance between Black Lagoon’smembers, who are hot tempered being Revy at the top.
He is then abducted with some of his colleaguesfor a disk that contains sensitive information about his company. When ourBlack Lagoon people, Dutch being the Employer, want some ransom for his sake,Rock’s boss refuses and tells rock to become silent in the deep blue sea.
This changes everything for him and he abandonshis job and joins the business of his own kidnappers, Black Lagoon. You shouldwatch the anime to know how things turn around completely for profits andpower.
There are some great action scenes with carchases and military base attacks. Some stories are touching as well. However,the base remains the same and let me summarize it for you (it’s not easy) andlook from the perspective of Black Lagoon: ‘They killed because they were inarmy and they thought that this would bring peace and harmony eventually. That‘eventually’ never came. They killed women, old people and children for thegreater good in their eyes. They were deceived by their superiors who are oldenough to fall into the hands of greed and lust for power.’
‘And now its time for them to take over thesame thing. They were young and excited and used to believe everything theywere told, but now, they are old enough and have learned to believe no one andtrust no one. This is why they kill and still justify their actions somehow andhere, I am talking particularly about Balalaika. She would be the perfectexample of what I told you above. If you want to call Revy an evil after youwatch this anime, then you would not be able to find a name for Balalaika thatcould justify her evilness.
What I don’t like about this anime?
It ended abruptly! Yeah, like other animes,this too ended suddenly after Balalaika kills his enemies in Japan to increaseher power. I was just thinking about two possibilities here, I wanted Revy tokill her and if that was just too much to ask, at least, I wanted Rock toovercome his fear for guns and use them for real. But now that I think aboutit, Black Lagoon would not survive if he starts wielding a gun too.
To make things worse, Black Lagoon Ova iscoming with 5 episodes named Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail.
Roberta?? She is the only female who defeatedRevy in a battle and she would be the second example, you know what I mean,don’t you? But in comparison to Balalaika, she has some part of her soul leftin her.
Conclusion
It’s a great anime if you want a great actionanime with girls shooting the heck out of people. Hellsing is the only anime inthis genre that surpasses it. However, both have different theme and taste. Somy point is, this anime is ‘the’ best and without a doubt ‘awesome’.
Warning
This anime contains blood and other disturbingscenes and black comedy to their greatest points. So, if you take these thingstoo seriously, then you should not watch it. Just watch it for entertainmentand forget about it. Don’t leave a single trail of what happened in BlackLagoon.
It’s not real by any means, but the causesshown are real and that make this anime so great. If you can handle thosecauses (betrayal, greed, power, slavery, blood bath) then you are in, else,find a romantic comedy anime like Ranma ½ and cherish it for as long as youlike.
