Every user wants to get the most out of his computer and that’s why he uses every possible way to make his PC better and better. One of those ways is keeping your computer up to date. This includes having latest drivers directly from respective company’s websites.
But sometimes latest drivers create problems due to which we have to seek the advice of our vendors which is in fact quite unnecessary. When I state about problems, I am concentrating on a particular problem related to graphics driver.
Sometimes, when we update our graphics driver (whether for external or onboard card), the display stutters and freezes and in most cases our computer restarts. This is not a very big problem if you know what to do and how to do.
Why this problem occurs?
One of the main reasons is the existing bug in our computer. This bug or virus corrupts the files of our newly installed graphics driver which in turn displays errors and dumps graphical memory on our hard disk resulting immediate restart.
How to fix it?
The actual idea is obviously installing the graphics driver again but it becomes tedious for many new computer users when you can’t even work on your computer to fix it up (because of the immediate freeze up and the infamous blue-screen error followed by a restart).
Well, I know that you don’t want to know all this fuss and in fact, you want to go straight to business.
These are some easy steps to follow and you’l have your computer work fine once again:-
1. Firstly, hit up the power button on your CPU (same for the laptop) and press F8 (function key) key from the very beginning until you see a screen displaying you various options to start your computer.
2. Select the option, ‘start your computer in safe mode’.
3. When you do this, you’ll be forwarded to a screen which displays the loading of core drivers (only those drivers which are necessary to let your system function normal).
4. When your computer will finally head for the main screen you’ll see SAFE MODE in the four corners of the screen to let you know that you are working in safe mode.
5. Your computer will not freeze and restart because system didn’t load the latest graphics driver which you have installed previously. In fact, system will load a basic VGA display driver which was stored in your operating system.
6. Now your work is to finally uninstall the new graphics driver and replace it with the previous version of driver or you may try a latest version which you may have missed from the respective website.
7. Open control panel and head for Programs and features (on vista OS), scroll down until you see the installed driver.
8. You can easily figure out the driver because the name will be followed by the company name of the graphics card that is fitted in your system.
9. Right click it and click ‘uninstall’, follow the on-screen instructions and you’ll have the driver uninstalled in no time.
10. Now restart your system. This time, don’t press F8 key or you’ll end up with the options screen once again. If you do, then select the option which says, ‘start my system normally’.
11. Since your latest graphics driver is now uninstalled, your screen resolution will be changed to 800X600 (or 1024X768 in some cases) and the graphical effects will be turned off automatically. But don’t worry; they will be restored automatically once you install the driver again.
12. Since, you already know the procedure to install a driver hence there is no point of stating it.
13. For more safety and reliability, scan your system for viruses and bugs (may be spyware or malware) before installing the new driver once again.
Note: Don’t install the same driver again which created problem with your system because it will create problems again and you’ll have to follow the same procedure again.
